Part II
Chapter 3 – Driving through the Outback
Written by Me
We were seemingly in the middle of nowhere, not a soul or house in sight, just gigantic paddocks, acres and acres of parched land and the rustle in the patches of dry grass. We could see foothills in the distance but other than that there was nothing to be seen out here or on the horizon besides the odd eagle. The land was so desiccated due to the drought we didn’t even see any kangaroos, not even on dusk. Without any waterholes not much can exist out here. There are a few gum trees scattered here and there, mainly on the side of the highway and also the not so innocuous Prickly Pear cactus plant which appears to have survived the extreme dry spells and spread through this harsh land. The invasive cactus was imported into the country over a hundred years ago to be used as a natural agricultural fence, now it has become a problem like the fast-breeding rabbits. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the easy drive; the road was in good repair, not very hilly, not very winding, not many other vehicles to share the road with. The rare car or truck that we do pass seems to have a purpose and a good reason to be out here, the driver will usually wave. The land is mainly used for sheep and cattle farming but we haven’t seen a great deal of livestock, in some parts there appears to be about 3 blades of grass per acre. However, there is something very, very beautiful about these large open spaces, regardless of the apparent lack of water supply it’s still alive and able to sit out any drought, ready to flourish when the rains finally fall again.
